March 11th - We are currently studying the different text structures and how they give us the information that we need as readers. We will continue to work with text structures this week. Students could have homework tonight if they do not finish their assignment in class today. We are answering five questions after reading two different text structures.
March 10th - Reading Log is Due WEDNESDAY of this week with 10 entries complete. Students began with an introductory lesson on comparing and contrasting different types of text structures. No Homework.

January 30th - Students have to read chapters 14-16 in The Giver. They have questions and vocabulary in their notebooks to answer over those chapters.
December 12th - Students will work on Word Choice and Tone. We will read Rockin' Guacamole and answer the questions that go with the passage.

December 5th - Students worked on author's purpose and point of view. We read an argumentative piece about wind energy. It was excellent and applied to our writing class as well. It allowed us to see the point of view of the author, claim the author stated, and the counter claim plus refute. Students worked on the questions that were with the passage in class. We checked the answers.

December 4th - Students worked with figurative, connotative and technical meanings. We read an interesting piece about electric guitars. Students completed the questions in class.

December 3rd - Students took quiz and completed a Venn Diagram comparing/contrasting the novel, NIGHT to the movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

December 2nd - Students reviewed figurative language for the quiz on Tuesday.

November 22nd and 23rd - Students have been viewing the movie, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". Students have been taking notes comparing and contrasting this movie with the novel, Night to be able to distinguish between the different point of views of the authors and of Germans vs Jews. Students will have a figurative language quiz on Tuesday - December 3rd.
November 21st - Students discussed a few additional figurative language examples from Night and then discussed mood and tone.

Students began reading the novel, Night by Elie Wiesel today in class. We read until page 9.
Homework: Students are asked to read to page 20 tonight. They have 10 questions to answer after reading. We watched an introductory video that I have posted to my webpage to introduce Night. We did not watch it completely, as I was unsure of some of the pictures that it shows of the Holocaust. Please view the video if you wish and if you approve, your child can watch it at home.

Instruction: We continued working on Public Service Announcements. Students wrote scripts and completed storyboards.

October 15th -Tuesday
Instruction: CC.8.RI.7 Students discussed and view public service announcements. The class brainstormed ideas for their own PSAs. We will begin the scripts tomorrrow.
Homework: Students are to decide on topic for PSA.

Instruction: CC.8.RI.7 Students discussed media channels, and read an article that contained information about advertising costs, dollar amounts spent by American households and the influence children and teenagers have on what their parents spend.
