Class Objectives
· Read a variety of literary genres using novels, short stories, poetry and other types of text.
· Write in a variety of applications including narrative, informative, argumentative and descriptive texts as well as respond to
various text types.
· Use proper conventions including grammar, capitalization and spelling as well as use of advanced descriptive vocabulary.
· Student will achieve their personal best with their reading expectations. They will learn to read texts critically, identify the
literary elements, interpret data, analyze information, and process that information to complete various tasks.
· Students will also learn study skills and research techniques to assist them in further academic endeavors.
· A successful student will leave these courses with an understanding of how to read for information, an appreciation of reading
for enjoyment, and the ability to apply what they have learned to real-life situations. They will understand how to strengthen
their writing by planning, revising, editing, and rewriting.
Students will have the ability to apply what they have learned to real-life situations.
Homework
· Each student should have a book checked out at all times and should read 30 minutes a night.
· Any work not finished in class will be considered homework in addition to any regular assigned homework.
· All papers must have first and last name with the class period also listed in the top right hand corner.
Homework load will vary according to both reading and writing projects.
Grading
100-90 = A
89-80 = B
79-70 = C
69-65 = D
64-0 = F

· Colored Pencils/Twistable Crayons
· Red/Black Pens
· 2 Pockets Folders (1 for Reading and 1 for Writing)
· Highlighters
· Loose Leaf Notebook Paper

Parent/Student Expectations
· Check assignments due in agendas (daily – releasing responsible to student as soon as student seems ready.)
· Monitor nightly reading and homework
Communication with teacher
Absences/Make-Up Work
· All assignments are to be made up due to absence.
· Students are responsible for obtaining assignments and making up any work missed.
· Check the “Were You Absent Box and check with a friend for assignments.
· You have one extra day to make up assignments per each day of an excused absence.
· All missing assignments will be posted in the grade book as a zero until the assignment has been completed.
You are responsible for any and all work missed while you are out.
Message to Students
My purpose is to help you master the common core standards for 6th grade in reading and writing. I have very high expectations for my students and I promise that I will do my very best to teach, assist, and encourage you this year. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. I’m looking forward to a great year!
